Our story
Bespoke Art projects for
your Neck of the Woods

Founded by Alastair Flindall, a Sheffield-based Community Artist, who blends a decade of diverse creative roles in arts events, production and education.

We collaborate with social enterprises, crafting top-tier visual projects from murals and illustration to exhibition, site specific and graphic design. Our work combines analogue and digital techniques, infused with nostalgia, collage, humour, typography, and texture.

Unveiling stories in marginalised areas, making culture accessible to all we employ augmented reality and interactive design for engaging audience experiences. Alastair leads inclusive arts ventures in partnership with Arts Charities, National Portfolio Organisations, and National Lottery-funded projects. These initiatives often involve co-creation workshops that nurture creativity and self-belief. Always pushing boundaries of what is possible in your neck of the woods.

organisations we have worked with

"We worked with Alastair on a Digital Residency focussed on amateur football in County Durham. It has been clear throughout the care and attention that the Neck of the Wood team takes in working with participants, finding, holding and sharing their stories and heritage. This was supported by Alastair's personal connection to the place and his thoughtful approach to a history and heritage that is keenly held by local people."

OUR STORY
BESPOKE ART PROJECTS FOR YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS

Neck of the Wood is a community arts studio by artist Alastair Flindall. It works with institutions in the education and healthcare sectors, local councils, and Arts Council England to deliver the kind of artwork and workshops that enliven communities.

Art can do big things. A community-designed mural doesn’t just brighten up the street. A creative workshop on local history isn’t just a nice way to spend an afternoon. A boundary-pushing, augmented-reality street installation isn’t just… well, you get the picture: the best kind of art brings people together, it plants seeds. Neck of the Wood started with commissions for murals on some of Sheffield’s best loved businesses. In 2020, founder Alastair Flindall was looking to move away from a career in arts education to focus on his own creative practice. With experience in arts events and production, his graphic illustrative work soon grew to encompass exciting, community-based projects.

Alastair now leads a small team capable of working on a range of big and smaller projects. You’ll still find him down at a wall in mucky overalls putting the final touches to a mural celebrating a lesser-known local hero. Equally, you might spot him in a classroom grappling with the creative energy of 30-odd ten-year-olds in a creative workshop. Failing that, look for him testing out the possibilities of new tech, brainstorming design and fabrication possibilities, hosting exhibitions or just having a cup of tea and a chat with one of his many collaborators.Purpose is one of those words that gets thrown about a lot these days, but it’s important that Neck of the Wood is making a difference. For Alastair, the most rewarding projects are those exploring meaningful stories in often underrepresented areas. Communities contain multitudes and it’s vital culture is made accessible to all. Alastair’s work is fun — infused with nostalgia, collage, humour, typography, and texture. Sprinkle in an interactive element, like augmented reality or a co-creation workshop, and that’s Neck of the Wood in a QR-activated nutshell. Alastair’s work has been on the front cover of magazines, sprayed 20ft-tall on buildings, and hung in galleries. He’s worked with Arts Charities, National Portfolio Organisations, National Lottery-funded projects, schools, train stations, museums, and clothing brands.

JESS HUNT, DIRECTOR at NO MORE NOWT

"Alastair led creative workshops with Year 5 students at Sutton Road Primary School to create artworks at Mansfield Railway Station. This enriching experience engaged students through various art techniques, from collage to painting, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Alastair's inclusive approach made every student feel valued, regardless of skill level, and the collaborative process built a strong sense of community.

The final artwork not only enhanced Mansfield Railway Station but also brought together people of all ages, instilling a sense of unity and pride. It stands as a symbol of our shared values and collective effort."

Karl, Director at First Art CPP

"Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alastair for both his illustration and mural painting skills. We are so pleased with the beautiful outcomes of our projects, so bright, detailed and reflect the desires of the patients at our hospital. Alastair is brilliant at working collaboratively and communicating with others."

Megan Dawes, Arts Coordinator at Nottingham University Hospitals
